The first motorway in Kazakhstan has been commissioned with Nursultan Nazarbayev checking its quality. The head of state went for a ride along the route, which, according to specialists, corresponds to the best international standards. This road used to be one of the most dangerous roads in the country and every year it witnessed about 70 car accidents with about 30 people killed. Today, the Astana-Burabai road will become one of the safest in the republic, since it is the widest and highest quality road in Kazakhstan. The most important thing is the fact that the road is equipped with barriers, which protect people from oncoming traffic, as well as from animals, which usually cause car accidents. One kilometre of this road cost around 500 million tenge and it is the only road in Kazakhstan where it is possible to drive with speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour. It is planned to install an electronic system for the establishing traffic control. Moreover, it is planned to equip the road with special banners, which will warn drivers about ice, wind and temperatures. Additionally, it is planned to establish video monitoring. Similar to German motorways, left turns will be allowed only at special interchanges, which amount to 25. These interchanges exclude the possibility of crossing oncoming traffic. Currently, the road is witnessing the construction of service areas. In the near future, it is planned to restore 85% of republican and 70% of local roads.
